The Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) has chosen the General Motors affiliate GM Defense to provide battery pack prototypes for evaluation on Defense Department systems.
GM Defense will make advantage of GM’s most cutting-edge battery technology, the Ultium Platform, to create a modular layout for the DIU. It is strategic for armored vehicles.
In line with the purpose of GM Defense, which is to use GM’s cutting-edge technologies for international defense and government clients, DIU, a Department of Defense institution, aims to hasten the integration of commercial technology throughout the US military.
More Electric, Autonomous, and Connected Future
According to General Motors, the Ultium Platform is the best choice for such a project since its propulsion system and integrated battery for electric vehicles design can give more capacity, performance, and endurance than any other GM hybridization or prolonged-range EV technology.
In parallel with this, the Ultrium Platform is flexible to changing requirements and new tech insertions when they become viable since it is customizable, scalable, and employs a variety of chemicals and cell configurations.

At the time, the military declared that it intended to evaluate the electric pickup to determine whether it satisfies its need for light- to heavy-duty battery EVs that can enable reduced fossil fuel dependence in the military and garrison situations.
With the most recent news supporting that, it is possible to assume that the Ultium-based battery pack prototype that GM Defense will be creating for the Department of Defense may be based on the massive battery with 217.2 kWh of useable capacity from the GMC Hummer EV.
