The electric Mercedes battery is from the Chinese BYD. Chinese media reports that BYD’s long prismatic LFP cells would be used in the battery of the electric CLA, which Mercedes unveiled last week.
Although they have been working together for a while, BYD and Mercedes, who have been co-developing electric vehicles under the Denza brand since 2010, have not yet completed a project on the battery side. When it was revealed that the entry-level model of the electric CLA would employ an LFP battery, rumors started to spread more widely.
The fact that CLA is one of the cheapest models in the Mercedes vehicle portfolio and will maintain this position in the electric era justifies the use of LFP batteries. Mercedes’ battery supply plan with BYD, which has been rumored for a long time, will probably be realized with the CLA.
It is worth noting that this claim, shared by a publication belonging to a research institute (CABRI) operating in China, has not yet been officially confirmed.
