An electric vehicle with a range of 1,448 kilometers will come from Toyota. Faced with heavy criticism from both shareholders and environmentalists for being late in the electric vehicle transformation, Toyota announced that it will launch five new batteries by 2030, increasing its annual sales of electric vehicles to 3.5 million.
The first of the batteries that will carry the Japanese giant to this goal will come in 2026. This battery will offer a range of 615 kilometers. It is 20% cheaper than the battery of the bZ4X and will be charged from 10% to 80% in 20 minutes.
The second generation is aimed to reduce the cost by 40% and increase the range by 20% with the bipolar LFP battery. In a bipolar battery with a higher power density, only one current collector is used for the anode and cathode. Thus, the production speed can increase while the production cost decreases. This system is currently used in nickel-metal hydride batteries in hybrid vehicles.
Toyota will launch its third-generation nickel-cathode bipolar battery that will increase the range to 1,000 kilometers in 2027-2028. The company says it will be 10% cheaper than the first-generation solution.
Solid-state batteries are expected to meet with customers in the fourth and fifth generations. In this way, it is planned that the cost of vehicle batteries will decrease to reasonable levels, while the range will gradually increase to 1,448 kilometers.
